Lavon Lake, Jim Chapman Lake reach normal conservation levels
Additional rain and runoff could require water releases for flood control
(WYLIE, TX – April 28, 2015) Recent rain events have helped fill Lavon Lake and Jim Chapman Lake, key water supply reservoirs for the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD), to normal conservation levels. As the owner and operator of Lavon and Jim Chapman Lakes, the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is monitoring reservoir levels for flood mitigation. USACE will determine if releases are required to protect public safety and reduce the potential for damage caused by a flood event. Lavon Lake reached its full conservation pool of 492 feet mean sea level (msl) on Saturday, April 25, 2015, with an elevation of 492.05 feet msl. Jim Chapman Lake reached its full conservation pool of 440 feet mean sea level (msl) on Saturday, April 25, 2015, with an elevation of 440.60 feet msl.
The USACE manages the levels of all USACE owned and operated reservoirs based on long standing flood mitigation procedures. When water levels rise into flood pool, which is above normal conservation pool, USACE releases water as needed to protect lives and property. On Monday morning, April 27, 2015, USACE began releasing 750 cubic feet per second (cfs) at Jim Chapman Lake and 1,100 cfs at Lavon Lake in accordance with USACE water control plans. Releases cease when the level returns to the normal conservation pool.
