City of Rockwall honors police

Friday is Peace Officers’ Memorial Day

(ROCKWALL, TX – May 11, 2015) Mayor Jim Pruitt officially proclaimed May 10-16 as Police Week in the City of Rockwall and designated Friday, May 15 as Peace Officers’ Memorial Day in honor of fallen officers and their families. U.S. flags are to be flown at half-staff that day.

Mayor Pruitt urged residents to salute the service of law enforcement officers in the community and the nation.

“The City of Rockwall is fortunate to have such a fine police department,” said Mayor Pruitt. “We appreciate the dedication they show every day in serving our residents.”

Nearly 60,000 assaults against officers are reported each year, resulting in 16,000 injuries. Since 1791, more than 20,000 law enforcement officers in the U.S. were killed in the line of duty. Names of theses dedicated public servants are engraved on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. Hundreds of new names will be added to the memorial to commemorate fallen heroes killed in the last few years.

There are about 900,000 law enforcement officers serving across the United States, which includes Rockwall’s dedicated police officers.

Rockwall Police Chief Mark Moeller said National Police Week provides the opportunity to openly honor those officers that have lost their lives in the performance of their duties.

“We not only honor them and preserve their memory, but we also acknowledge the sacrifices of their families,” Chief Moeller said. “We are all keenly aware of the dangers in our jobs, but are committed to providing professional police service in protecting our community.

“We are eternally grateful that we have not had to add a Rockwall Police Officer’s name to a memorial, and pray that we never will.”

Rockwall police officers will wear a black band over their badges to honor fallen officers that have died in the line of duty.
