City of Rockwall to host Memorial Concert Sunday at The Harbor

Rockwall remembers those who gave all

(ROCKWALL, TX – May 19, 2015) Rockwall and surrounding communities are invited to attend a free Memorial Concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 24 at the Harbor Amphitheater. This event will feature music that is representative of wars throughout the history of the United States. It will be a musical celebration in memory of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms in the defense of the Republic of Texas and the United States of America.

“It seems that for some time now Americans have forgotten the meaning of Memorial Day. Memorial Day is not about the beginning of summer, BBQ’s, parades, or other activities that cause many to forget the purpose of the day. It is a day of civic remembrance and honor,” says organizer Lt. Col. Tom Galli, US ARMY (Ret).

Memorial Day, originally Decoration Day, began during the Civil War with the decoration of the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the conflict. In the subsequent 150-plus years, the day has been expanded to include all of our wars and conflicts. It is a day where we all pause and remember the brave men and women who put on the uniform of our armed forces, who put themselves in harms way so that we could sleep safely in our homes at night, and who died in the service of our nation.

“America celebrates three holidays of liberty: July 4th, Veteran’s Day, and Memorial Day. Memorial Day is the most important of the three days because we honor the veterans who paid the ultimate price to guarantee our liberty,” said Galli.

The Memorial Day concert will feature musical performances by the Rockwall Community Band, Rockwall Children’s Chorus, the Rockwall High School Symphony Orchestra, and the Rockwall High School Show Choir. The event will be hosted by Rockwall Mayor Jim Pruitt and narrated by Gary Freedman. This will be Rockwall’s first civic and commemorative concert to remind our community of the true meaning of Memorial Day.

The event has been organized by Lt. Col. Tom Galli, US ARMY (Ret); Maj. Gen. Gary Bunch, US ARMY (Ret); Music Director Mike McGill; Rockwall ISD’s Director Of Arts, Chris Kosterman; Rockwall’s Children’s Chorus Director, Allen Clark; and Terry Garrett. Complimentary valet for veterans and civilians with disabilities will be provided free of charge by Honda Cars of Rockwall.
