Meals on Wheels honors its volunteers at Appreciation Luncheon

(ROCKWALL, TX – May 15, 2015) Meals On Wheels Senior Services of Rockwall County returned the favor for its many hard-working and committed volunteers and treated them to a hot, delicious meal on Friday, May 15 during the organization’s Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. It was a way to say thanks for all the meals those individuals  help deliver to seniors throughout the county each week.

Rockwall County Judge David Sweet and MOWSS Executive Director Margie VerHagen addressed the volunteers during the event – held inside the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints — and thanked them for their efforts in providing meals, caring and independence to the community’s elderly and disabled.

“I can’t tell you how much that we thank you for serving as volunteers to deliver meals on wheels,” Sweet said. “You folks do it week in and week out, and I know how tough it is, and I want to thank you for your dedication and for making Meals On Wheels a success in Rockwall County.”

“I want to thank each and every one of you – our volunteers – for the priceless gift of time that you provide to help us improve health, reduce isolation and promote independent living for our elderly and disabled in Rockwall County,” said Margie VerHagen, MOWSS Executive Director. “You do so much more than deliver a meal. Our seniors call us at the office and tell us how kind you all are and how you deliver compassion, encouragement, kindness and love to them.”

The event also saw a couple of the organization’s longtime volunteers Bill and Barbara Wilson receive the “Annie Cornelius Friends of Seniors Award” for their exceptional service and unmatched devotion to collecting the route sheets and distributing the food to all the volunteers.

Thanks to the dedicated and selfless efforts of its three employees and 120 volunteers, MOWSS provides around 45,000 meals every year for the homebound elderly and disabled throughout the county.

Since 1978, MOWSS has brought assistance for those older adults facing health and mobility issues that cause the need for assistance to foster independence regardless of duration of need. The program provides hot, nutritious, noontime meals and personal contact to homebound elderly in Rockwall County each weekday. Meals are monitored by a licensed dietician following the State Health Services regulations and meeting one-third of the recommended dietary allowance.
