(ROCKWALL, TX – August 29, 2015) The public is invited to hear District 113 Texas State Rep. Cindy Burkett discuss new Texas child protection laws she authored in the 2015 legislative session, during a Rockwall County family violence prevention meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 1 at the Rockwall Golf & Athletic Club Champion’s Room.
Burkett is also a Board member of Americans Ending Abuse, which is sponsoring the monthly meeting and will soon launch a child abuse prevention campaign across Rockwall County.
Rep. Burkett is one of two state legislators who just received a “Children’s Champion” award from Texans Care for Children for sponsoring three bills which better protect children in foster care, child care facilities and the juvenile justice system. State Sen. Royce West also received the award.
Rep. Burkett successfully passed HB 781, legislation to improve children’s safety and support in foster care by strengthening screening and training requirements for prospective foster parents.
She sponsored HB 1180 to provide parents with more information about potentially unsafe child care facilities, and an amendment to SB 1630 to protect more vulnerable youth in the juvenile justice system. Additionally, she filed legislation to improve support for families raising children with mental illness.
“Thanks to Rep. Burkett’s leadership, more Texas children will stay safe and reach their potential,” said Stephanie Rubin, CEO of Texans Care for Children. “She is a true champion for Texas children and families.”
