(ROCKWALL/HEATH, TX) Mathnasium’s Fifth Annual TriMathlon, a national competition that allows elementary students to demonstrate their math skills, win prizes and earn money for their school, is happening this weekend!
Open to kids in grades 2, 3, 4 and 5, the FREE event is held at Mathnasium Learning Centers across the United Statesand Canada, including Mathnasium of Rockwall-Heath – now in its new and larger location at 1300 E. Ralph Hall Parkway. The local competition begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17. Space is limited and pre-registration is required at mathnasiumtrimathlon.com.
“Each year, families from across the district look forward to the TriMathlon as a fun and exciting way to engage their children in math. This friendly competition helps to build confidence and stimulate learning while bringing friends together. Plus, the more students that participate, the more money Mathnasium donates back to Rockwall ISD,” said Bob Barnes, who owns the local learning center along with his wife Becky.
For the past several years, the couple has helped hundreds of kids in preK through 12th grade better understand math, overcome homework frustration, and “make math make sense.” They’ve been strong supporters of the Rockwall ISD, its teachers and students.
How the TriMathlon works
Similar to the way a triathlon tests an athlete’s physical fitness through three athletic challenges, the TriMathlon tests a mathlete’s mental fitness through three fun-filled, grade level math challenges: the Counting Game, which tests students’ ability to count from any number, to any number, by any number; the Magic Squares Challenge, in which students are awarded points for developing their own math problems; and the Mental Math Workout, which tests students’ number sense by asking them to solve problems without pencil and paper. Questions become increasingly more difficult as the event progresses.
All competitors will receive a goody bag and a certificate of participation. The top three scorers in each grade level will receive additional medals and prizes. A grand prize tie-breaker event will be held the following weekend, in which the top scorers in each grade level from among all participating centers will compete.
“Mathnasium is providing practice tests so children can practice and prepare ahead of time for the event. Practice tests, rules and registration information are available at mathnasiumtrimathlon.com,” said Bob.
