Church youth group fills emergency food boxes for Meals on Wheels recipients

(ROCKWALL COUNTY, TX – Nov. 13, 2015) Volunteers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Youth Group gathered this week to assemble Emergency Food Boxes for recipients of Meals on Wheels Senior Services of Rockwall County.

Emergency Food Boxes are provided to MOWSS clients in the event that meals aren’t able to be delivered. Boxes are distributed to home-delivered clients twice annually and contain a three to five day supply of stable shelf-life food.

“There are two factors that can affect our ability to deliver as promised,” said Margie VerHagen, Executive Director of MOWSS. “Our contract kitchen for various reasons may not be operating. Inclement weather including severe storms and winter ice build-up may cause the kitchen to be closed. A primary concern of MOWSS has to be the safety of our drivers, and if traffic and road conditions are unsafe for the volunteers, we don’t put them in harm’s way.”

Those same conditions may affect the ability of older adults to secure food outside the home.

MOWSS wishes to give big thank you and shout-out to board member Susan Scott for coordinating the Emergency Food Box assembly.
