(ROCKWALL, TX – Nov. 11, 2015) On November 5, 2015, the Rockwall Fire Department discovered a strong odor similar to that of a petroleum based product, while driving through the intersection of N. Lakeshore Drive and West Rusk Street in Rockwall. The Rockwall Fire Department discovered the appearance of a petroleum product on the water in the drainage channel located to the south of the intersection.
The Fire Department has been continuously working with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and a private environmental clean-up company to coordinate the mitigation of the petroleum product. The investigation of the source and the appropriate recovery of the material is an ongoing process. The clean-up effort will likely take several more days. The TCEQ is the State agency leading this effort and the Fire Department is supporting these efforts. The Fire Department is in contact with all parties involved several times a day to ensure that the health and safety of the public is the highest priority.
Residents are advised to stay clear of the drainage channel while the clean-up is in progress. If you have any questions regarding the ongoing efforts and clean up, residents may contact the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality at 817-588-5800 or Chief Mark Poindexter at 972-771-7770.
