Annual pancake breakfast benefits Rockwall literacy program

(ROCKWALL, TX — April 16, 2016) Pancakes, syrup and sausage were on the menu at the 6th Annual All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast to benefit the Rockwall County Reading For Adults Literacy Program on Saturday, April 16. Held at Applebee’s in Rockwall (687 I-30 Frontage Rd), the Reading For Adults (RFA) volunteers and tutors staffed the restaurant for two hours, greeting and serving the customers enjoying a hearty breakfast. Eighty people enjoyed breakfast and over $1,400 was raised to support RFA.

The RFA volunteers serving included: Karen Birnbaum, Sharon Bowman, Carol Cease, Carol Childress, Sharon Fullington, Jeanette Fullington, Dorothy Hunger, Rudy Hunger, Heidi Mantz, Kamrey Mantz, Carol Mee , Kathy Melston, Jamie Rubush, Jerry Rubush, Bill Snowden, Kay Snowden and Kathy Williams.

Creating balloon crowns, flowers and swords – all while captivating kids young and old – was local performer Ragtime Annie (Melissa Williams). After amazing the crowd with balloon gifts, Ragtime Annie donated her balloons and cash tips to the RFA Literacy Program. Williams may be contacted at aanie@ragtime-annie.com or ragtime-annie.com.

The RFA volunteers are local community members, from a variety of professional backgrounds. Their common interest is helping other adults become better educated and have more productive, confident lives.

Serving Rockwall County for over fifteen (16) years, RFA provides free adult educational services. Classes include English as a Second Language (ESL), GED studies and preparation, Citizenship preparation and Adult Literacy. With over 300 adult students and 75 local volunteer tutors, the program is headquartered in the Rockwall County Library, with several alternative locations for classes. Adults interested in class schedules or testing for ESL, GED or Citizenship courses should visit the Literacy Center in the Rockwall County Library or call (972) 204-7705.

Funded by grants and The Rockwall County Library Friends of the Library, the RFA is also supported by private and corporate gifts and donations. Proceeds from the Pancake Breakfast will be used for teaching materials, such as language software, computer equipment, white boards and display easels for the Literacy Center.
