(ROCKWALL/HEATH, TX – May 23, 2016) Third graders at Amy Parks Heath Elementary School recently participated in Pioneer Day, a time when students bring history to life dressed as pioneers.
As part of the tradition, students bring their lunches to school in pails. No packaged snacks or Lunchable-type meals are allowed; they bring only what the pioneers would have brought to school: a piece of chicken, biscuit, fruit, cookies, drinks in mason jar. Students use the “outhouse” and do their lessons on blackboards.
“Third graders took a trip back in time to the 1870’s,” said teacher Connie Westerman. “Pioneer Day is a culminating activity when students enjoy dressing, packing a lunch, and learning about early founders from Rockwall County as well as the one-room schoolhouse from that era.”
