(ROCKWALL, TX — Sept.3, 2016) The Rockwall Yellowjackets almost mounted a comeback in the final game of the Cotton Bowl Stadium Prep Showcase on Saturday, but fell just short 34-32 against the Rowlett Eagles. The Jackets trailed going into halftime 24-12 and things got worse to start the second half when Rowlett took the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to the house, building their lead and keeping the momentum in their favor.

And then Rockwall’s offense sprang to life.

Quarterback Matt Jones connected with star wideout Sam Crawford on touchdown passes of 58 and 78 yards to bring the Jackets within six heading into the final quarter down 31-25. Jones then found Reid Rakow in the end zone on a five-yard pass, and with the extra point attempt good Rockwall took the lead for the first time in the game, 32-31, with 9:44 to play in regulation. That would be the last time the Jackets would score.

After a field goal by Rowlett sailed through to put them in the lead 34-32 with 6:14 left to play , Rockwall’s offense failed to get anything going and the Eagles ran the clock out to seal the win.

Rockwall falls to 0-2 on the season and come home next week to host Southlake Carroll (1-1).

The Cotton Bowl Stadium Prep Showcase also featured a couple intriguing matchups on Friday, as Jesuit versed Plano East and Skyline faced Mesquite Horn. Prior to the Rockwall-Rowlett matchup on Saturday afternoon, North Mesquite squared off against Lakeview Centennial.
