Letter to the Editor: Op Ed from Karen Jacobs, Candidate for House District 33

(ROCKWALL, TX – Oct. 26, 2016) When will we fix our broken school finance and property tax systems? Only when we #Vote them out.

Our school finance system is fundamentally broken – 25 year old formulas, “Robin Hood” practices and lack of funding have put us in the bottom of states for education. Just this past week, Capital One’s CEO stated in reference to a skilled workforce, “We are facing a crisis like we’ve never faced before”.  The Problem? Our kids need more training for the jobs of the future — not less.

Combine this with a property tax system that favors commercial property owners over homeowners and the seeds of disaster are being sown.

Just like Oklahoma, we have experienced a decline in oil and gas tax revenue coupled with continued tax breaks for those in power. Oklahoma school districts are cutting their school week back to 4 days to try and alleviate the lack of financial support.

Until we start voting for the people who care about our schools and for fair taxation we will continue to fall behind in our quest to win the future.

Care about Texas? #Vote for Democrats this fall.
