Artist Reception, Awards Ceremony 5-7pm Saturday, Oct 15
(ROCKWALL, TX – Oct 7, 2016) Record crowds are expected at Rockwall Art League’s Annual Fine Art Show & Sale, now in its 16th year at Rockwall Rotary Hall, 408 S. Goliad St.
Open to the public, this FREE event runs Friday, Oct. 14 through Sunday, Oct. 16, with an Artists Reception and Awards Ceremony from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15. Show hours are noon to 7 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Saturday’s reception provides an opportunity for everyone to meet and mingle with participating artists as well as the show judge.
This year there will be seven different categories of art on display: Oil; Acrylic; Water Media (watercolor, gouache); Photography; Drawing (graphite, pastel, pen and ink, colored pencil, charcoal, watercolor pencil); 3-Dimensional Sculpture; and Mixed Media;. Cash prizes of $200 for first place and $100 for second place will be awarded in each category, as well as $500 for Best of Show. Participating artists may enter a total of three pieces.
“The show grows in size and scope each year, and offers a little bit of something for everyone,” said Jim Bryant, President of the Rockwall Art League. “This year, 3-D Sculpture will be its own category. And we are happy to feature the works of our ArtReach students with special needs.”
Bryant said that as the show expands, so does the need for additional space. “Our committee chairs are actively searching for a larger venue for future shows. The Rotary Club has been a very supportive partner – and Rotary Hall has served us well – but in the future we will need a larger venue to feature more artists and welcome more art lovers.”
One area that continues to grow in popularity is photography. The RAL expects more contestants to enter this category this year, as more artists showcase their creativity in the field using digital enhancements. “It’s an exciting medium,” said Bryant, “and it’s attracting a lot of attention.”
The 2016 show will be judged by nationally known artist Ellen Soderquist, who is recognized for her intelligent and sensuous graphite drawings of the nude human body. As a teacher of life drawing, she advocates that her students learn the role of the nude in the history of art and that they communicate their ideas about humanity through their work. As a lecturer and author, she delves into the past to bring the complex relevance of the unclothed human body to the consciousness of contemporary culture. Soderquist is represented by Level Gallery in Dallas (www.levelgallery.com).
