Royse City elementary schools selected as finalists for National Showcase

(ROYSE CITY, TX — Dec. 19, 2016) William Fort & Miss May Vernon Elementary schools have been nominated by the Flippen Group to receive a Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase School award for the 2016-2017 school year. In 2003, Royse City ISD began an initiative to transform its campuses into an emotionally safe and relationally connected place for students, staff, and parents to come alive with a love for learning.

After researching programs used by some of the nation’s most successful schools, Royse City ISD leaders chose to bring Capturing Kids’ Hearts to its campuses. Teachers and staff have learned processes to connect students with their peers and adults on campus, and to create classrooms where students are excited to enter and learn every day. As a result of implementing Capturing Kids’ Hearts, Royse City ISD has enjoyed fostering relationships with students across the district. From Kindergarten to 12th grade, educators are benefiting from the training they have received from Capturing Kids’ Hearts. Most important though, are the bonds that students form with their teachers and coaches.

Over the next several months, a Flippen Group site team will visit Fort Elementary and Vernon Elementary to observe and experience for themselves the remarkable impact taking place. Each was considered for this award based on the following criteria: 1) nomination based on observation, 2) level of implementation of Capturing Kids’ Hearts processes by all staff as measured by online surveys, and 3) data demonstrating that Capturing Kids’ Hearts has made a significant improvement in attendance, discipline, climate/culture, or academics.

“It has shaped every part of our building!  CKH gives us as teachers the blessing of truly and deeply knowing each little life we have the pleasure of teaching.  The bonds and relationship between students/families and our faculty have been strengthened and made impacts that reach further than learning and achievement.  Our campus is no longer measured by scores and tests, but by how anyone feels when they walk through the doors and knows how much they are loved, cherished and known here,” said May Vernon Elementary School Principal Shannan Hayes.

“The training through Capturing Kids’ Hearts is truly life changing and makes you not only think about the way you treat your school family but relationships with your own personal family,” said Fort Elementary Principal Danette Dodson. “I think the biggest benefit is that our students know we love and care about them and CKH is not just something we do anymore, it is who we are.”

As part of the nomination process, a site visit to each nominated campus will be conducted to gather additional quantitative and qualitative data and to interview students, teachers, administrators, and parents. A matrix of key measurements will be used to gather information during a campus walk-through. Finally, an additional survey will be conducted to collect feedback regarding the perceived climate and culture of the campus and its conduciveness to learning. Following the site visit, the selection team will review all accumulated data and select the campuses to receive the Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase Schools award.

With this award, the Flippen Group seeks to recognize and celebrate schools that go the extra mile each day, building an environment where students and staff feel safe and connected. They believe these unsung heroes, producing exemplary outcomes and paving the way for other schools to follow, need and deserve recognition for a job well done.
