(ROCKWALL, TX — September 29, 2017) The Laramore-Osborne American Legion Post is partnering with the Royse City elementary schools to host a youth art contest. The theme will be “Thank you for serving”. Third and fourth grade students from across the district will be participating in the contest. The deadline for the contest is Tuesday, Oct. 31 and the top three winners will receive Wal-Mart Gift cards of $50, $25 and $15. There will be additional prizes for the runner ups.
“We want to raise awareness to not only Veterans Day and what it means but also raise awareness for the arts. The arts are often overlooked in comparison to the core subject’s but the arts have been shown to improve students critical thinking skills and boost literacy in English language skills,” said Post Commander Jason Castleberry. “The American Legion has always been a supporter for the youth and programs that bring awareness to our veterans. The art contest does both but in a fun atmosphere where the kids are more likely to understand.”
In addition to the prizes the art will be displayed throughout the community where students and their parents will be encouraged to check it out and take a selfie. They can use the #thankyouforserving and @roysecitylegion to share their art work.
