(ROCKWALL ISD, April 9, 2018) The fifth graders at Cullins-Lake Pointe Elementary School had a very successful Colonial Night last November, raising more than $500 by making and selling items similar to those made and sold during Colonial times. Parents, friends and other family members paid for the goods and services as the students simulated free enterprise in the colony. The night was a huge success, however, it did not end there.
Mrs. Gayle Kidd, who organized the event, said, “I talked to the students about ways we could help in our community and together we decided on helping with Hurricane Harvey. I researched ways to help and found a website, https://help.goarts.org, where we could communicate directly with a teacher and school to help with items needed. The students liked this idea and we all felt like the fine arts program at Cullins does so much integration to help us with so many of our 5th grade projects; we could not imagine not having the supplies to have that support. I contacted the music teacher from that school, which we liked because it was close to our size and was completely dislocated from their home school. The teacher let me know of some of the needs they had and we purchased items that they needed.”
Juan Seguin Elementary School in Fort Bend ISD was the school our CLP 5th graders chose to assist. The elementary asked for items for their music program like music stands, instrument posters, Djembe drums and composer biography books. The items were all purchased and shipped to the school along with handmade Christmas cards.
Traci Patterson is the music teacher at Juan Seguin Elementary School. She received the items just this week and this is what she had to say. “The kids were very excited to receive the cards from your students and enjoyed sharing them with one another! Thank you so much! The posters will add so much color and visual interest to our room (both now in our temporary room and later when we move back home). And my 5th graders LOVED being able to stand up to practice their recorder instruments with the new music stands you gave us! Just awesome!”
