“Our area neighbors are invited to join us on Sunday, October 28, as we celebrate Oktoberfest at Joy Lutheran Church in Rockwall,” said Brandy Trygstad, head of Joy’s Outreach & Fellowship Committee. “We’ll have a free lunch featuring German food, door prizes and activities for children.”
The event, with the support of Thrivent Financial, is a fundraiser for “Love to the Max,” a nonprofit organization celebrating the life of Maxwell Schwolert by providing scholarships for high school students. Max died at age 17 from complications of the flu during a holiday vacation. He was the son of Joy’s Minister, Tom Schwolert, and his wife Melanie.
Trygstad said that following a 10:30 worship service with communion, a meal will be served featuring bratwurst, sauerkraut, potato salad, sweet-and-sour red cabbage, hot dogs, desserts and other Oktoberfest favorites.
Other fall activities at Joy include the following:
- Children’s Sunday school classes are taught by Mary Oltmanns and Dawn Mahoney at 9:15 a.m.
- Minister Tom Schwolert leads periodic adult education series Sundays at 9:15 a.m. The next series will be a study of the Book of Acts to begin November 5.
- A group called “Young@Heart,” composed mostly of Joy’s senior members, gathers on the second Tuesday of each month at a popular restaurant in the area.
- The women of Joy gather on the last Wednesday of each month to play Bunco and share an evening meal while the men of the church gather at a nearby restaurant.
