(ROCKWALL, TX – March 12, 2019) Rockwall ISD culinary students from Gene Burton College & Career Academy placed first at Saturday’s ProStart State Competition – making this the third time RISD students have earned this honor. They will compete at the National Invitational representing the State of Texas the week of May 8-10 in Washington, D.C.
During the state competition, students were given 60 minutes in a 10×10 square space using only butane burners (camping stoves) – no electricity and no running water. They were judged by renowned culinary professionals and chefs from all over Texas.
“We are so excited to have the opportunity to represent the great state of Texas in the National ProStart Invitational in Washington D.C.,” said Chef Cody Hayes. “The ProStart program provides students with an opportunity to get a taste of what our industry is all about, and year after year produces well-rounded young people ready to build their future in the hospitality industry. Our team is thankful beyond measure for the scholarships they received too! D.C, here we come!”
