(Garland ISD – November 27, 2012) Sharing Garland ISD’s commitment to college and career readiness, Webb Middle School wants to make sure its students are aware of every possible path after graduation. That’s why the campus has organized Career Day events for the past 23 years.
“Kids need to know what it’s like out there and how important it is to get an education,” said Webb Principal Jim Lewis.
On Nov. 14, more than 50 GISD staff and community members spent the morning at Webb MS, talking with students about their job duties and professional experiences. Some even brought tools of their trade to share.
Presenters included policemen, firemen, engineers, ministers, business owners, a veterinarian, a judge, a singer, an athletic trainer, and many others.
As Webb’s Career Day nears a quarter of a century, Lewis says some presenters have participated almost as many years.
“Because it’s successful and positive, they want to keep coming back,” he said. “I always get such good feedback from both presenters and students.”
Soaring to Success was the theme of Webb’s 2012 Career Day. Secretaries Lanita King and Melody Walker organized the event, beginning shortly after the school year started in September. While the theme changes every year, the purpose remains the same.
“We’re touching the lives and hopefully the futures of these kids,” commented Lewis. “They get to see how effective the staff and community members are in their jobs, and it’s a good role model for them to follow.”
