Free Job Connection workshops, networking underway at Lake Pointe Church Rockwall

(ROCKWALL, TX) Looking for a job in today’s market can be frustrating, uncertain and lonely. Job Connection, a Ministry of Lake Pointe Church in Rockwall, is a program that combines classroom-style training with networking/discussion-style meetings for people who are struggling in their job search. The training and workshops are free, open to everyone, and underway now at Lake Pointe Church.

“You don’t have to be a member of any church, group or even a Rockwall resident to participate,” said Bobby Cornelius, lead trainer at Job Connection.  Anyone who would like to come will be welcomed.

As a ministry, Job Connection’s primary objective is sharing Christ and building believers as they support and guide job seekers to their next great job. It is organized, managed, and run by volunteers who give their time and efforts to help people.

As a group, this ministry realizes that when people find themselves unemployed, they typically feel anxious about their future, and they may feel alone. Feelings of uncertainty after job loss are not uncommon.  When confronted with job loss, an individual may experience a rollercoaster of emotions. The ministry is designed is to surround these individuals with a God-centered environment that focuses on the consistent saving grace of Jesus Christ.

“Job Connection comprises Christian professional men and women who have the skills necessary to help guide, teach and support job seekers during what is typically a very dark time in their lives,” said Dennis Scherer, a lead volunteer. “When confronted with unemployment, you may experience emotions similar to grieving: shock, denial, anger, sadness, depression – and eventually a sense of adjustment. During the grieving process, you may find yourself with a number of challenges including financial concerns, unstructured time and career confusion. Developing a plan of action will help you take control and move forward. It is important that individuals surround themselves with a God-centered environment that focuses on the consistent saving grace of Jesus Christ.”

2019 was a successful building year for Job Connection as the organization trained volunteers and develop effective workshops. According to Cornelius, 108 individuals who attended Job Connection training classes in 2019 found employment. In its first six months, 15 volunteers worked together to conduct 58 training classes that resulted in 174 hours of classroom training.

Mike Smith, one of the Lead Volunteers said, “The Ministry is growing and is need of additional volunteers, both on campus and off campus.  ‘On-Campus’ volunteers work directly with job seekers who attend classes from 9 to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays.  ‘Off-Campus’ volunteers are also needed to provide outreach to participants who may not be able to attend the daytime meeting.  The ‘Off-Campus’ volunteer’s duties can be performed in the evenings or at other times convenient to their particular schedules. Currently, the ministry has need of an Outreach Coordinator, PR/Marketing Coordinator and Database Coordinator. There are a number of ways to serve.”

This year’s program, like 2019, includes classroom style training from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays.  The training workshops cover topics from discovering your true career direction and writing effective resumes to tips on how to conduct yourself during interviews and how to navigate the job market.  The four-part workshop series is repeated every month throughout the year.

The workshops are supplemented by networking and discussions at 9 a.m. on Thursdays that can range from cover letters and navigating LinkedIn and mock interview practice.

Both the training and networking take place in Room A128 of Lake Pointe Church. For more information about this valuable and free assistance, or to find the latest information and current training schedule, visit lakepointe.org/jobconnection.
