Donations needed for Emergency Food Boxes
(ROCKWALL COUNTY, TX – March 14, 2020) With the extension of Rockwall ISD’s Spring Break and the closing of the contract kitchen where daily meals are prepared, Meals on Wheels Senior Services of Rockwall County has had to suspend daily deliveries to its elderly and disabled homebound clients.
Community members and organizations seeking to help local seniors through this period of uncertainly may sponsor an Emergency Food Box. A $50 donation provides one senior with a “mercy box” filled with non-perishable food to last about 10-14 days.
“The health and safety of our seniors is of utmost importance,” said Margie Verhagen, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels Senior Services of Rockwall County. “While we have many dedicated volunteers willing to deliver daily meals, the kitchen in which the meals are prepared is closed. Our Emergency Food Box program exists to sustain our clients in situations like this when deliveries cannot be made – whether that be due to severe weather and unsafe roads – or in this case, a Coronavirus pandemic. But we need your monetary donations to help us fill 400 Emergency Food Boxes for immediate delivery. We thank everyone who has so generously donated already. We still have a ways to go so no senior has to go without a meal.”
