(ROCKWALL, TX) The Rockwall County Library will host The Glass Room Experience, an interactive pop-up exhibit that explores the hidden aspects of everyday technologies and invites visitors to reflect on how they relate to the internet, privacy, and the inner workings of today’s tech industry.
“Our aim is simple: start the local conversation about data privacy,” said RCL librarian, Stephanie Milberger, who organized the event.
“At the very least, we want visitors to understand that, while they feel they may not have anything to hide, we all leave behind little data crumbs whenever we use anything digitally connected: our smartphones, websites, smart home devices, and so much more. Taken altogether, these crumbs tell a story about each of us, and businesses and data brokers feed on these stories. It’s our data and we owe it to ourselves to understand how it’s used to help AND hurt us.”
Visitors are encouraged to explore how facial recognition works, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s house, and the cost of privacy, your data behind the scenes at large tech companies, and more. A take-home “Data Detox Kit” will help visitors implement what they learn and perhaps reclaim some control over their digital lives.
The Glass Room Experience is FREE and open to all visitors, Monday, March 16 through Saturday, March 21. Please visit the library’s blog at rockwallcountylibrary.org for daily hours.
