Royse City Police Department investigates fatality accident resulting in death of Justice David L. Bridges, Texas 5th Circuit Court of Appeals

ROYSE CITY, TX – July 26, 2020 – The Royse City Police Department is investigating a fatality accident involving three vehicles on I.H. 30 west bound near FM 2642.

The preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 9:30 pm on July 25, 2020, the suspect, identified as 32-year-old Megan E. Smith of Royse City, was driving the wrong way in the westbound lanes of I.H. 30 and struck two vehicles.  One of the vehicles was driven by Justice David L. Bridges of Rockwall.  As a result of the collision, Justice Bridges’ vehicle caught fire and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.  The driver of the second vehicle that was struck was not injured in the accident.

The suspect, Megan Smith, was believed to be intoxicated.  She was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.  Once released, Megan Smith, was arrested and charged with Intoxication Manslaughter, a 2nd degree felony, and booked into the Hunt County Jail.

The investigation is ongoing by the Royse City Police Department Accident Investigation Unit.
