Rockwall Fire Department recognizes engine crew for lifesaving efforts in submerged vehicle incident

ROCKWALL, TX (September 25, 2020) The Rockwall Fire Department takes great pleasure in recognizing with pride and admiration the members of Engine 2 A-Shift, Captain Mike Caffey, Driver/Engineer Adam Honea, and Firefighter Michael Sauder with a Unit Citation.

On September 20, 2020, the Rockwall Fire Department responded to a report of a vehicle that appeared to be sinking in Lake Ray Hubbard near the 200 block of Interstate 30. Upon arrival, the Engine crew determined the vehicle, which was approximately 40 yards from the shore, was occupied. Captain Caffey and Firefighter Sauder donned personal flotation devices and entered the water in an attempt to rescue the occupant.

Once they reached the vehicle, they found the car doors locked and water up to the dashboard. Unable to open the car doors, Caffey and Sauder quickly gained entry by breaching the car windows. Despite the occupant being combative and attempting to refuse assistance, Captain Caffey and Firefighter Sauder were able to safely get them to the shoreline. Once on the shore, Caffey and Sauder provided patient care and transferred the occupant to an awaiting ambulance.
