Rockwall ISD crossing guard pushes through adversity to continue doing what she loves

ROCKWALL/ROWLETT, TX (Oct. 9, 2020) Becky Hix has been a crossing guard at Cullins-Lake Pointe Elementary for 24 years. Even though she’s able to retire, she says she just can’t do it. “I would miss the kids and their families too much,” said Becky.

But continuing being a crossing guard almost wasn’t possible before.

A while ago, Becky became ill with a serious disease that made the physical demands of being a crossing guard difficult, but she was determined not to let it beat her.

Becky had read an article in the newspaper about a woman who had overcome a physical disability through the help of horses. Becky’s daughter loved horses and the search for hope began. Becky and her daughter found a horse named Senora Princess. Through much trial and hard work, Becky and Princess helped heal each other. Becky can now enjoy life outdoors and no longer needs any medication for her illness.

Becky loves her job as a crossing guard and is so glad that she can physically perform this job. That kind of grit and determination exemplifies what Rockwall ISD is all about!
