State Fair-themed learning underway at Garland ISD

GARLAND ISD (Oct. 7, 2020) Although students won’t be able to visit the State Fair this year, Garland ISD is bringing the fun to them!

Garland ISD is hosting the region’s first-ever Intersession this week. From Oct. 6-9, students who elect to participate will have fun-filled, four-hour days that include breakfast, two learning sessions, lunch, contests and more. The State Fair-themed event will provide acceleration, enrichment and intervention to district students. You can find many photos of the start of our Intersession on social media. Just search #GISDIntersession to see the fun and excitement!

What is Intersession?

In order to meet the academic needs of students following the COVID-19 shutdown, the Garland ISD Board of Trustees approved the region’s first intersessional academic calendar in June. Intersession is a concept that embeds additional instructional dates dedicated to student support in the fall, spring and summer. Not all students will be required to attend these small-group sessions, which aim to meet specific intervention, enrichment and acceleration needs.

In addition, Intersession reduces burnout by including frequent, smaller breaks at the end of grading cycles. Our first Intersession week is scheduled for Oct. 6-9.

Every campus in Garland ISD has tailored this week’s instruction and activities to their specific Intersession in-person and remote learners. You can watch our video promoting this week on our district’s YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhXAgwKp4cE
