Rockwall YMCA crowns volleyball champs and caps off spring season with an ace

ROCKWALL, TX – June 1, 2021 — The J.E.R. Chilton YMCA at Rockwall spring volleyball program served up some fantastic matches in its end-of-season championship tournament over the Memorial Day weekend.

Taking home the championship for the Lower Division (1st-4th grade) in the tournament was the Spikers coached by Stacie Renfro. The Spikers won both their games over the Stingrays in convincing fashion, 25-9 and 25-10.

“Our focus is always on teamwork, hustling and improving. I was really proud of the girls for collectively having a goal of doing our best and having fun,” Renfro said.

The championship marks the second in two seasons for the Spikers and Coach Renfro, who took home the gold last fall. Coach Renfro complimented the Rockwall Y for its efficiency in running a phenomenal volleyball program.

“The staff have always been very good about making sure practices run on time, and that gym is clean and always prepared for us on practice and game days. The officials were great all season and they do a great job reiterating the YMCA pledge every game. They did a really great job managing the restraints with COVID and making the best of the situation,” she said.

In the Upper Division (5th-7th grade), Coach Amanda Miller and the Lady Swords claimed the 1st place trophy over runner up the Volley Llamas. The Swords won a hard-fought first game 25-23, but seemed to find their stride in the second game to come away with a 25-9 victory and a championship.

“Volleyball is such a mental game, and the girls really brought their A-game,” Miller said. “They have grown so much from the last season we played, and I am just so proud of them.”

Miller said this was her first season coaching volleyball at the Rockwall YMCA.

“We are a school team, and we wanted to play off-season. When they were little, my own daughters played at the Rockwall Y for several years, so I know it’s a fantastic program. All of the staff are so nice, lots of great sportsmanship between the teams, and we had a wonderful time,” Miller said.

The Rockwall Y continues to draw lots of participation in its youth sports programs each year, and this spring was no exception; The Y had a total of 19 teams and 235 players participate in its spring volleyball program this season.
