ROCKWALL, TX (Sept. 27, 2021) In front of a crowd of over 1,000 prosecutors, investigators and key personnel, Rockwall County District Attorney Kenda Culpepper received the 2021 “Texas Prosecutor of the Year” award from the Texas District and County Attorneys Association and the State Bar of Texas Criminal Justice Section. The award was presented at the TDCAA Annual Conference in Galveston this past week.
During the ceremony, TDCAA Incoming President and Galveston County Criminal District Attorney Jack Roady said, “Kenda’s heart is for the profession and specifically to maintain excellence in that profession.” He cited her efforts to keep prosecutors connected during the pandemic which included coordinating over a hundred regional meetings by Zoom to keep the criminal justice system moving. “Because of what she did and what she does, she is extremely deserving. It was unanimous when we decided who should be the Texas Prosecutor of the Year.”
Culpepper, who was the first woman to take office as a District Attorney in the history of North Texas, has also been a past Chair of the State’s Criminal Justice Section and Professionalism Committee, President of TDCAA, and Co-Founder and President of the Rockwall County Children’s Advocacy Center. She is currently the Texas delegate to the National District Attorneys Association, a state board member of the Texas Bar College and the Texas Bar Foundation, and sits on state-wide task forces combatting issues including Family Violence, Child Abuse, and Human Trafficking.
Upon receipt of the award, Culpepper thanked TDCAA and the State Bar Criminal Justice Section and then praised prosecutors. “I have had the honor of being surrounded by prosecutors for most of my career and I must say – you inspire me,” she said. “In spite of the obstacles you endure, you do what you can to see that justice is done. Thank you so much for what you do, and thank you so much for this wonderful honor.”
Culpepper has been named by Texas Monthly as a “Texas Super Lawyer”; by D Magazine as one of the “Best Lawyers in Dallas”; and by Forbes SkyRadio as one of “America’s Most Influential Women.” She is married to former Rockwall Mayor Jim Pruitt, and they have one daughter in Rockwall schools.
“Kenda exemplifies what we all aspire to be as elected prosecutors,” said Criminal Justice Section Chair and 106th Judicial District Attorney Philip Mack Furlow. “She is fair, she is just, and she is extremely diligent in the pursuit of justice. She is recognized throughout the State of Texas and her local community as a leader, and she works tirelessly to make Texas and everyone she knows better. Our congratulations on this well-deserved award.”
