Joint investigation of illegal gambling, seizure of 8-liner machines at Royse City gas station

ROYSE CITY, TX (Nov. 19, 2021) On Thursday, November 18, 2021, the Royse City Police Department and the Rockwall Police Department Narcotics Unit conducted a search warrant at the Quick Track Gas Station at 926 IH30 Royse City, TX in regards to an illegal gambling investigation.

During the search, seven electronic 8-Liner machines and US currency was seized from the business. The search warrant was the result of an ongoing joint investigation regarding the business operating 8-liner machines and paying cash to the players in excess of what state law allows.

Per Texas law, 8 liners are strictly meant to be used for amusement purposes only. This means that the players can only win novelty items or cash prizes up to a maximum value of $5. The investigation started several months ago after the Royse City Police Department received information that the business was paying out cash to subjects playing the machines at the location.

In addition to the reported illegal gambling, the Royse City Police Department had noticed an increase of other reported activity at this location. Since January 2020, records show the Royse City Police Department has investigated reports of thefts, numerous narcotic violations, assault, warrant arrests, credit card abuse, a weapons offense, criminal mischief and the arrest of a subject for failing to register as a sex offender at the location.

The Royse City Police Department had also noticed an increase of reported criminal activity in the surrounding area including a reported armed robbery at a nearby business last year. The subject who was arrested for the robbery was found to have been at the Quick Track Store just prior to the robbery. Due to the number of narcotic arrests that had taken place around the property, the Royse City Police Department requested assistance the Rockwall Police Department Narcotics Unit with the investigation.

This is still an ongoing investigation. The Royse City Police Department is aware of other businesses in and around the area that are also operating 8-liner machines. At this time, we have no information to suggest these businesses are operating illegally but we strongly encourage the business owners to make sure they and their employees are following state law.
