ROCKWALL, TX – Jan. 6 , 2022 — Throughout December, Rockwall couple Brenda and David Hughes strung up an estimated 40,000 Christmas lights at their home in The Shores – all for a great cause!
At their lights display, the Hughes accepted donations of non-skid socks and blankets as well as monetary donations for Meals on Wheels. On Jan. 5th they donated everything collected at the display to Meals on Wheels Senior Services of Rockwall County – a grand total of $2,800 plus lots of socks, blankets, food and toys.
The mission of Meals on Wheels truly spoke to Brenda, whose elderly mother recently fell at her assisted living home and broke her hip. When she learned abut how Meals on Wheels provides nutritious meal deliveries, daily human contact and supportive services to local homebound and disabled elderly residents, she felt it was their calling to give back to the cause.
“I just felt this mission was God sent,” Brenda said. “My heart has been so full and growing every day.”
Brenda and David went all in on the spirit of giving, dressing as elves and passing out Christmas candy and candy canes to folks driving by to see their dazzling display. They even welcomed a whole trolley full of onlookers at one point! The home ended up winning The Shores Christmas Lights Display Contest, and the Hughes included the prize money in their donation to Meals on Wheels.
Giving back to others was something Brenda and David’s son Nathaniel, who passed away in April of 2019, loved to do. Brenda said Nathaniel would constantly help others in need, even giving away his own socks and shoes to others who didn’t have any in the wintertime.
“My son was such a giving person, and I think he is smiling down on me,” Brenda said. “We enjoyed every minute of giving back this holiday season.”
