‘Just Serve’ events in Rockwall to commemorate 9/11

ROCKWALL (Aug. 30, 2022) —Do you remember where you were on September 11, 2001? Chances are (if you’re old enough) that you remember exactly. It was a day of fear and loss, but the 9/11 story in America is ultimately a story of hope, with brave firefighters and other first responders who rushed in to rescue and serve others in the time of greatest need. How can you commemorate this day in 2022?

9/11 Day is a nonprofit organization that was founded to honor those who lost their lives and those who ran to the rescue. They promote September 11th as a “National Day of Service and Remembrance.” What began as a terrorist act is now a day of service to strengthen both local communities and the nation as a whole.

Just Serve is a website sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that brings together volunteers with organizations in need of help. Just Serve has partnered with organizations across the globe, but is searchable by zip code, so you can find a project in your own backyard. There are even opportunities for remote service that you can do from home. Just Serve is a coalition partner with 9/11 Day to help you serve on this day and beyond.

Here in Rockwall,  #WALKTHEBRIDGE will observe 9/11 with a reading of the names  of the first responders who lost their lives that day held at the SH 66 Public Boat Launch, starting at 7:46 am. Each month, #WALKTHEBRIDGE gathers to walk a symbolic 22 miles to increase public awareness of the 22 first responders and veterans who take their own lives every day. Both events are open to the public.

Whatever you do on September 11, 2022, take a moment to remember those who lost their lives. Then make a plan to serve in your community: groups like Bikes for Tykes, Meals on Wheels, Helping Hands, Rockwall Public Library, and more need your help. All you have to do to make the world a better place? Just serve.
