With more than 60,000 lights, this year’s ‘Stay in the Light’ display will be even bigger and brighter

ROCKWALL, TX (Nov. 28, 2022) Brenda and David Hughes are hustling and bustling to string an estimated 60,000 Christmas lights outside their home at 1655 Plummer Drive in The Shores. They anticipate being able to ‘flip the switch’ this weekend, and they invite the community to drive by to enjoy the festive holiday display.

Through their colorful display, the Rockwall couple hopes to encourage folks to ‘stay in the light’ in memory of their son, Nathanielle, who suffered from depression. He passed away in April of 2019 at the age of 29.

Brenda explained that even at his lowest point, Nathaniel was always helping others and giving back to those in need. “One February when it was 17 degrees outside, he literally gave a homeless person his socks and shoes and went barefoot in the winter,” she told Blue Ribbon News.

This year, the Hughes are once again accepting donations of new blankets and non-skid socks which will be given to Meals on Wheels Senior Services of Rockwall County for distribution to their elderly clients. Food items and toys will also be accepted. Last year the display raised $2,800 for MOWS.

“This is how I get through the holidays,” Brenda said. She shared that this effort began the year Nathanielle passed away; her husband started putting up lights to cheer her up and bring some peace. “Next thing you know, our display won a contest in The Shores, bringing joy to everyone.”

This year they’ve added cardinals and handmade flowers.

“We have a lot of man hours and love in our display,” she said. “I will have outfit changes and I will hand out candy canes every single night I am home.”

Brenda added, “If we win this year’s contest, we will double the amount of prize money and donate it to Meals on Wheels.”

Look for their donation box, or drop donations directly at MOWS’ office at 4398 Hwy 276, Rockwall, TX 75032, or call them at 972-771-9514. Envelopes will also be available for monetary donations. A $35 donation will help feed a homebound senior for one week this holiday season.
