Rowlett Area Chamber launches National Civics Bee

ROWLETT, TX (Dec. 15, 2022) – The Rowlett Area Chamber & Visitors Center proudly announces the launch of the 2023 National Civics Bee, an initiative aimed at encouraging more young Americans to engage in civics and contribute to their communities. Organized in partnership with The Civic Trust of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation the competition will inspire middle schoolers to become better informed about American democracy, to engage respectfully and constructively in the community, and to build greater trust in others and institutions.

Middle school students from public, private, charter, and home schools are invited to take part in the first-round civics essay competition. A distinguished panel of judges (including government officials, business leaders and educators) will review the 500-word essays and the top 20 students will be selected to move on to the next round of competition: a live quiz event to test their civics knowledge. The finalists and top winners will receive various prizes, including $500 cash for first-place. The top 3 winners will then have a chance to compete at the State level.

Michael Gallops, President & CEO of the Rowlett Area Chamber said, “We are excited to launch the 2023 National Civics Bee. Our schools, our cities, our communities are built on the foundations of civics. We want to help students appreciate the importance of civics in our everyday lives.”

The live quiz event will take place in mid-April 2023. The Bee gives your students an opportunity to share their thoughts, ideas, and voices about our community. It is also a way to increase their knowledge of civics. Submissions for student essays will begin January 13th and the deadline is February 24, 2023.
