Royse City students earn top honors in Broadcast Excellence

ROYSE CITY, TX (March 31, 2023) A group of eleven Royse City High School advanced audio-video students returned from Long Beach, California this past week, bringing home top honors in Broadcast Excellence as one of the top 25 Monthly High School News Shows in the nation.  The honors were announced at the Student Television Network convention and contest held last week. Over 2500 students and 140 schools attended the convention.  Student Television is a national organization for high school film and broadcast students.

“I’m so proud of our students and the videos they produce including our daily Bulldog Rise announcements, bi-weekly Bulldog Bark, and our award-winning monthly RCTV news show,” said Sherri Duggan, AV teacher at RCHS.

RCHS students competed in various timed events in video production ranging from short film to convention promo.  Students also attended workshops led by professionals from Netflix editors to a national news cameraman.  Companies like Canon and Sony exhibited at the convention along with many colleges.

This is the 14th convention Royse City students have attended.  Over that time, they have brought home 13 national awards including Student of the Year in 2018.

Royse City offers students opportunities to excel in video production with beginning classes in middle school to advanced classes in high school.  Students in the program gain hands-on experience producing, anchoring, and filming in a studio or on-location.  Students also operate the video-board and produce content for all home football games.

Former students from this program have gone on to work for ESPN, CNN, Southwest Airlines, and Saturday Night Live.
