Rockwall, TX (April 4, 2023) – On Monday, April 3rd, Friends of the Rockwall County Library (FOL) hosted a luncheon for National School Librarians Day to celebrate the important role school librarians play in the development, education and guidance of students of all ages. In addition to lunch, each campus librarian received flowers, a gift bag and a family membership to the Rockwall County Library.
Both Rockwall County school districts came together to applaud, recognize, and personally thank each school librarian and their respective principal. Adding their own personal comments were Royse City ISD Superintendent, Mr. Kevin Worthy, and Rockwall ISD Superintendent, Dr. John “JJ” Villarreal.Dr. Joan Terry, FOL President, shared the significance her high school librarian played in her life saying, “If I wasn’t acting in a way I should, she always encouraged me by bringing me a book to help me develop leadership.” Closing appropriately with, “So to you librarians who are honest about improvement – thank you so much!”Those also in attendance to recognize and celebrate our local school librarians included Leigh Plagens, standing board member, Frank New, Rockwall County Judge, Friends of the Library board and standing committee members, Rockwall County Library Director Marcine McCulley, Janice Carson President of Rockwall Library Association, RISD and RCISD staff and others.
The FOL recognized several additional ISD staff members who helped coordinate this event, pulling details together and setting the stage for this to be an annual event. “None of this would happen today if not for two people in RCISD and RISD – RCISD, Chief Communications Officer, Adi Bryant, RCISD Executive Director of Elementary Schools, Amy Hawkins, RISD Chief of Communications, Renae Murphy, and Director of Instructional Technology and Media Services Ricki Smith.”
The impact of the school librarian and the importance behind a child learning to read was simply and profoundly stated – “Reading is what makes us better! Know you are treasured for what you do.”
