City of Fate finds first positive case of West Nile

FATE, TX (Aug. 23, 2023) – City officials were alerted this afternoon that there was a positive test for West Nile within the city limits of Fate, Texas. The identification came as part of our routine weekly testing. The mosquito came out of a reservoir southwest of the Williamsburg neighborhood (see map below).  Fate staff conducts weekly tests in 5 areas of the city.  There have been no other positive tests in the other 4 testing areas.  “The city has a long history of proactive testing throughout the community. While we hate to hear the news of a positive test, we have response plans in place. We will continue to monitor the situation and do all in our power to keep the public safe”, says Steve Gilbert, Fate’s Director of Community Services.

An environmental contractor will spray within a ½ mile radius of the positive test site.  Fate plans to have them spray around the reservoir, Lupe Garcia Elementary School, and western parts of the Williamsburg neighborhood.  We are hoping to spray done as soon as possible and will have it done overnight to minimize exposure.  Lastly, the pesticide and application techniques that Fate uses are very safe for use in suburban areas; however, residents and pets are encouraged to avoid direct contact.
