Rockwall church group is quilting for a cause

ROCKWALL, TX (Oct. 25, 2023) Quilting is something of a lost art. But for a group at Lakepointe Church who meet each Monday, quilting is far from lost. In fact, it is very close to their hearts as they live out the old adage, my soul is fed by needle and thread.

Lakepointe Quilters – Rockwall formed over 20 years ago, gathering each Monday to quilt, socialize, and support each other through life’s challenges and joys. Some are Lakepointe Church members, although not required; many are new to the group while others have participated for years.

The care and passion Lakepointe Quilters put into their craft suggests thoughts of home, tradition, and family. How many of us recall snuggling under a quilt at our grandmother’s home? A quilt will warm your body, comfort your soul, and given its use and uniqueness, make memorable gifts.

There is, however, even more to Lakepointe Quilters. As Ruth Castleberry, one of the group leaders says, “This is a ministry built on a labor of love!” because the quilts lovingly made are later sold with proceeds directed to church missions. On occasion the group will hold a demonstration but most often quilts are sold through word of mouth or social media.

Recently a demonstration sale was held with 12 quilts sold generating proceeds over $1000! The group then supported their mission by purchasing groceries for the Helping Hands food bank. This summer 44 duffle bags were filled with quilts and soft toy animals for children under the care of Child Protective Services. Their next project will find them stuffing 60+ shoe boxes with small items such as pencil bags, crayons, notebooks, small toys, and more to be Christmas presents for children in Mexico.

Quilts often become treasured family heirlooms. Linda, a newer member, knows this well. This has much to do with the way in which she became involved, which Linda refers to as “a special calling”. Her mother-in-law asked Linda to finish a quilt her own mother had begun many years prior. Having no knowledge of where to start she needed help and found Lakepointe Quilters!

The group proclaims that all are welcome regardless of experience and skill. Linda agrees saying, “The group welcomed me, someone without any quilting experience, and taught me from step one so that I could fulfill my mother-in-law’s dream.”

Making one quilt is a lengthy process often touched by many hands. From quilting to adding the batting and stitching, one quilt is easily 12 hours of work! It is also a creative process. Whether using patterns or creating their own designs on graph paper, working with cotton fabric donated from multiple sources, somehow, they create masterpieces that work together.

You can support the ministry by purchasing a quilt, which makes a wonderful holiday or housewarming gift. View the available quilts and learn more about the quilting group on Facebook at Lakepointe Quilters – Rockwall.
