Rockwall, TX (December 20, 2023) – Celebrating the Rockwall County sesquicentennial, the Rockwall County Historical Foundation recently buried a time capsule marking the occasion. Rockwall County was formed 150 years ago, in 1873, when a small portion of Collin County was set aside to become what is now the smallest county in the state.
Acknowledging the many features that make Rockwall County unique, Lorne Liechty, member of the Rockwall County Historical Foundation spoke to the special significance of the time capsule and the way it holds our history. The capsule, planned for opening 25 years from now, will highlight this life and time for future generations.
With input from city officials and citizens, a range of submissions were suggested and included from the school districts of Rockwall ISD and Royse City ISD, local cities, businesses, and even a copy of Blue Ribbon News.
To further commemorate the event, an art competition was held with Rockwall ISD and Royse City ISD art students submitting over 100 pieces of art! Members of the Rockwall Art League provided the judging and event winners were announced with works on display. The winning artwork was developed into a poster and postcards as well.
The Sesquicentennial Plaza, located between the Rockwall County Courthouse and the Rockwall County Library, is the home of the time capsule.
The Commissioners Court and local sponsors provided funding for this project.
