Rockwall County Sheriff’s Department puts best face forward for cancer awareness

Rockwall, TX (December 1, 2023) – Things get hairy around Rockwall County each November and the Rockwall County Sheriff’s Department is involved.

That’s right, No-Shave November just came to a close!

For the 3rd year, the Rockwall County Sheriff’s Department temporarily suspended the dress code requiring clean-shaven faces for the purpose of participating in No-Shave November. With 37 staff members facing up to the challenge to don a neat, clean, and professional beard or mustache for a very important, and in many cases, personal cause.

Begun in 2009, and raising over $10 million to date, the No-Shave movement has become synonymous with the month of November. Behind No-Shave you find men from all walks, organizations, and locations pledging to cease shaving for the entire month of November, donating funds they would have otherwise spent to the No-Shave organization. All this goes to support a variety of organizations who provide cancer prevention, research, and education including Be the Match, Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, Kidney Cancer Association, American Cancer Fund, Testicular Cancer Society, and others.

Rockwall’s well-coiffed men share a variety of reasons for participating, with most having that personal connection, knowing someone close to them who has faced cancer. As is their very nature to do so, the opportunity to help improve the lives of others speaks to them, this year successfully raising $1675 for No-Shave.

As November comes to a close, the challenge moves into a competition with the Sheriff’s Department holding a beard contest with members of county departments judging the beards on texture, color, and overall appearance. Eight competitors faced off and this year’s winners are:

First Place – Sergeant Alex Bricker

Second Place – Captain Alex Gray

Third Place – Officer Sergio Mata

Left to Right: Officer Mata (3rd place), Captain Gray (2nd place), Sergeant Bricker (1st place), Sheriff Terry Garrett

Taking the program just a step further, this year the department will continue No-Shave into December with donations directed to Texas Valor Project raising funds for veterans and first responders suffering from Traumatic Brain Injuries having raised $1350 so far!
