Meals on Wheels Senior Services receives grant award to fund meals

ROCKWALL, TX (Jan. 12, 2024) Meals on Wheels Senior Services (MOWSS) announced it is the recipient of its first grant from the Carl B. & Florence E. King Foundation, which funds a range of social service needs across North Texas, including Rockwall County. The awarded funding will go directly to the Nutrition program providing nutritionally balanced, home-delivered meals Monday through Friday delivered to the client’s door by a trained volunteer. The program ensures proper nutrition, a safety check from the volunteer and the opportunity to receive additional services to maintain their independence and enhance quality of life for homebound individuals.

This fiscal year MOWSS provided meal delivery to over 700 unduplicated clients and are on pace to provide 95,000 meals. In addition, multiple caregivers and seniors who do not receive meals contact the office for information and referrals, benefits counseling referral, and senior emergency management and other resources.

Margie VerHagen, Executive Director said, “MOWSS is honored to provide crucial services to the elderly in our community funded by the King Foundation. Over the coming years, the number of seniors in our county will grow exponentially and will need additional resources to maintain their independence. This awarded funding sustains the program and ensures no senior will be placed on a waiting list. The Foundation’s generous support brings our vision to life.”
