Rockwall, TX (February 13, 2024) – National Charity League, Inc. (NCL), the nation’s premier mother-daughter nonprofit organization, has a unique program designed to empower members to succeed as confident, well-rounded contributors to society while making a positive impact in the communities they serve. The National Charity League, Inc. Texas Pearl Chapter participated in NCL’s third annual “National Day of Service”, held on January 15, 2024, also recognized as Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Day of Service.
To honor Dr. King’s legacy, this year’s focus on literacy was a dynamic way to address a critical need in local communities. According to the latest literacy survey by the National Literacy Trust (NLT), almost one in five children between the ages of five and eight do not have a book of their own at home. NCL’s goal is to provide access to reading and spark a lifelong love of reading, which was accomplished through an organized book drive.
Our chapter, Texas Pearl, is pleased to share that we donated more than 300 books to Arms of Hope Boles Campus this year. This effort is in collaboration with chapters across the country. Last year, over 12,000 NCL members donated more than 115,000 books. Our goal this year is to surpass these numbers, with efforts continuing through the end of January.
Our VP of Philanthropy, Jennifer Beasley, recently met with a case worker at Arms of Hope to deliver the books. She plans to use the books to host a giant Book Fair for the children who reside there. These children do not usually get to participate in book fairs in public school because they lack the financial means to do so. This will provide them with the opportunity to experience the fun of picking out their own books to keep and enjoy. Many of the Texas Pearl members also made “shoebox libraries” for the children to use to keep their books in their rooms, decorated with wrapping paper, stickers, and ribbons.
