Eight Bells and All’s Well:
Honoring Captain Scott Self and the Legacy of Seawolf
Rockwall, TX (May 13, 2025) – As the sun dips below the horizon on May 16, 2025, the sails of Seawolf will once again catch the evening breeze, marking the official opening of the season for Sail with Scott on Lake Ray Hubbard.
This date is more than just the beginning of another year of scenic excursions—it is a tribute to the enduring legacy of Captain Scott Self, the visionary who brought the majestic Seawolf to life and shared its beauty with countless passengers.
Seawolf is no ordinary vessel. This striking, 40-foot-long, 25-foot-wide sailing catamaran, hand-built from Spanish cedar, is a floating testament to craftsmanship and passion. With a guest capacity of 49, it has become a cherished sight on Lake Ray Hubbard, offering breathtaking views and unforgettable experiences. From tranquil sunrise cruises to the ever-popular sunset and starlight voyages, Sail with Scott provides the perfect setting to celebrate special moments or simply escape the ordinary.
Seawolf sails out of the Harbor on the eastern shore of Lake Ray Hubbard, the best sailing waters of the Dallas area. For a cruise, Seawolf is docked at the lighthouse on the waterside of the Hilton Hotel in Rockwall.
Captain Scott Self, a beloved figure in Rockwall, poured his heart into Sail with Scott. A true mariner at heart, his dedication to creating a space where people could enjoy the serenity of the water and the magic of sailing was unwavering. His passing left a profound void, but his spirit continues to guide every journey aboard Seawolf. Today, his son, Billy Self, carries on the tradition as owner of Sail with Scott, ensuring that each cruise remains a reflection of his father’s love for the lake and the community.
Scott’s wife, Jan, was his lifelong sailing partner. When they married, the two embarked on a six-month honeymoon, sailing a 44-ft. Swan sailboat down the coast of Europe to Africa and on to the Canary Islands. The couple often said, “Couples that sail together, stay together.” That certainly held true for Scott and Jan, who celebrated 47 years of marriage before his passing.
Captain Billy Self said, “My dad built this boat, Seawolf, with the hope it would outlast him—a thought that brought him immense joy. Sailing was his passion, and he loved sharing that experience. After he passed in 2020, I finally earned my US Coast Guard Captain’s license in 2021, fulfilling his longtime wish. Now, our family keeps Seawolf sailing with ‘Date Nights,’ offering couples a chance to reconnect and enjoy Rockwall’s beautiful lakeside.”
Captain Amy Lee Pierce operates Seawolf with the same ardent love of the lake. Having worked under Captain Scott’s tutelage for several years, she gained invaluable experience and a deep appreciation for sailing. Her adventures have taken her across the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean from Panama to Los Angeles, shaping her into the seasoned mariner she is today. Under her skilled guidance, passengers can expect the same dedication and passion that made Sail with Scott a beloved experience.
Passengers aboard Seawolf have their pick of exceptional excursions. The sunset cruise is an absolute favorite, offering a front-row seat to nature’s most spectacular show as the sky transforms into a canvas of vibrant hues. For those who enjoy a touch of nighttime enchantment, the starlight cruise presents a peaceful, moonlit journey across the lake. Early risers can soak in the beauty of the lake’s quiet awakening with a sunrise cruise, while families looking for a delightful daytime adventure can enjoy a relaxed and scenic ride on the family cruise.
Guests are encouraged to take the helm and get their picture taken steering Seawolf, creating a lasting memory of their sailing adventure. The crew loves when guests pitch in and help set sail, making the experience even more interactive and enjoyable. They also welcome birthday celebrations, proposals, and bridal parties, offering a unique and unforgettable setting for these special occasions.
Sail with Scott is more than just a business; it is a Rockwall tradition, a gathering place for locals and visitors alike to enjoy the simple pleasure of sailing. Each departure is a moment to pause, to celebrate life, and to honor the legacy of the captain who made it all possible.
In maritime tradition, the ringing of eight bells signifies the end of a sailor’s watch and the assurance that all is well. As Seawolf embarks on another season, those words take on an even deeper meaning, echoing across the waters of Lake Ray Hubbard in memory of Captain Scott Self. His watch may have ended, but his vision continues to sail on.
