Storm Season PSA: What North Texas Homeowners Should Know About “Free Roof” Offers

ROCKWALL, TX (March 6, 2026) Storm season in North Texas brings more than wind and hail. It also brings a wave of contractors knocking on doors offering to replace roofs through insurance claims.

Yesterday alone, my house had eight unsolicited door knockers asking if we wanted a new roof without paying the deductible. This was surprising considering we have a gate and a very protective German Shepherd. One of the visitors nearly learned that lesson the hard way when they walked up while we were outside.

Joking aside, this type of sales pitch raises a serious issue that homeowners should understand.

If a contractor tells you they can replace your roof without you paying your insurance deductible, that is a red flag.

In Texas, the homeowner is responsible for the deductible on an insurance claim. A contractor who offers to waive, absorb, or “work around” that deductible is encouraging insurance fraud. Texas law requires that deductibles be paid by the policyholder when a claim is filed.

Sometimes these offers are presented in ways that sound harmless. A contractor may say they will “handle the deductible,” offer upgrades instead, or suggest ways to make the numbers work. Regardless of how it is described, the concept is the same. If the deductible is not actually paid by the homeowner, the claim is not being handled properly.

Aside from the legal risk, there is another practical concern. If a contractor is willing to misrepresent costs to an insurance company, homeowners should pause and ask what other corners might be cut.

Storm recovery already creates enough stress for families. The last thing anyone needs is a roofing problem turning into a legal or financial problem.

There are many reputable roofing companies in North Texas that do excellent work and follow the rules. The key is knowing what responsible contractors will and will not say.

A reputable roofer will inspect the damage, help document what they see, and explain the process clearly. They will never promise a “free roof,” and they will not encourage you to avoid your deductible.

If you are approached by someone offering to replace your roof through insurance without paying the deductible, the safest response is simple.

Thank them for stopping by and close the door.

Protecting your home should never require bending the law.
