Sharon Shannon Elementary ‘Stars’ Shine Bright with Student-Led Cereal Drive

ROCKWALL, TX (April 7, 2026)  – The student body at Sharon Shannon Elementary has proven that you’re never too young to make a massive impact. Led by the Student Council and a spark of inspiration from a student named Aurora, the Shannon “Stars” successfully collected 274 boxes of cereal to help tackle local hunger.

The initiative began when Aurora brought the idea to the school’s leadership, hoping to find a way for students to give back. The 4th and 5th-grade Student Council members quickly took the reins, organizing a school-wide collection that rallied students, parents, and faculty alike.

The drive was made possible through the dedicated support of school counselor Olivia Lemons, along with 5th-grade teachers Christy Campos and Beth Peoples, who helped the students coordinate the logistics and turn a great idea into a community-wide success.

“It is so heartening to see a student’s idea blossom into a project that will put food on the table for so many families,” said Rena Fockler, Helping Hands Food Pantry Coordinator. “The Stars truly lived up to their name – they saw a need and stepped up to lead. This donation of 274 boxes ensures that hundreds of kids in our community will start their school day with a full stomach.”

The cereal boxes will be donated to Rockwall Helping Hands, providing immediate relief to local breakfast programs. This student-led achievement highlights the culture of kindness and leadership being fostered at Sharon Shannon Elementary.
