AUSTIN, TX — House Speaker Dustin Burrows appointed Representative Katrina Pierson to chair the Subcommittee on Maternal Health, Menopause and Access to Evidence-Based Medicine last week as part of his announcement of additional interim charges ahead of the 90th Legislature, which include examining hormone health and menopause care, maternal nutrition, newborn coverage, and other barriers affecting women’s health care.
Today, House Committee on Public Health Chairman Gary VanDeaver formally established the subcommittee, clearing the way for Chairwoman Pierson and its members to begin work on those charges.
“I’m grateful to Speaker Burrows and Chairman VanDeaver for the opportunity to dig into women’s health issues that have gone overlooked for far too long,” said Representative Pierson. “This subcommittee gives us an opportunity to bring those issues to the table, hear from patients, physicians, and experts, and turn what we learn into meaningful action for Texas women.”
The new role builds on Pierson’s recently announced Texas Women’s Health Initiative, which sets aside the political debates that often dominate women’s health policy to focus on real, everyday health needs, address gaps in care and advance practical, evidence-based solutions for Texas women.
Representatives Elizabeth “Liz” Campos (D-San Antonio) and Joanne Shofner (R-Nacogdoches) will also serve on the subcommittee.
State Representative Katrina Pierson represents Texas House District 33, including Rockwall County and portions of southern Collin County. She sits on the House Committees on Public Health; Homeland Security, Public Safety & Veterans’ Affairs; and the Subcommittee on Disease Prevention & Women’s and Children’s Health. She also serves as Chair of the Subcommittee on Maternal Health, Menopause and Access to Evidence-Based Medicine.
Submitted press release, Texas House of Representatives Katrina Pierson, District 33.
