AUSTIN, TX — Chairwoman Katrina Pierson today concluded the House Subcommittee on Maternal Health, Menopause, and Access to Evidence-Based Medicine’s first hearing, focused on improving women’s health outcomes through prevention, early intervention, and evidence-based care.
The subcommittee heard testimony from health care providers, researchers, health plans, community health organizations, and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission on prenatal nutrition and supplementation, Healthy Texas Women, and opportunities to improve health outcomes.
“Today’s testimony reinforced that prevention is not only health policy, but it is also fiscal policy,” said Chairwoman Pierson. “When we identify risks earlier, help patients stay engaged in their care, and invest in interventions that produce measurable results, we have an opportunity to improve women’s health while avoiding much more expensive care down the road.”
“We spend a tremendous amount of money treating poor outcomes after they happen,” Pierson said. “I want to know what we can do earlier, what actually works, and what the data tell us. If we can improve quality of care and outcomes while reducing unnecessary downstream costs, that is a win for Texas women and Texas taxpayers.”
The hearing is the first in a three-part series planned by the subcommittee as it develops recommendations ahead of the 90th Texas Legislature.
State Representative Katrina Pierson represents Texas House District 33, including Rockwall County and portions of southern Collin County. She sits on the House Committees on Public Health; Homeland Security, Public Safety & Veterans’ Affairs; and the Subcommittee on Disease Prevention & Women’s and Children’s Health. She also serves as Chair of the Subcommittee on Maternal Health, Menopause and Access to Evidence-Based Medicine.
