When Aging Parents Resist Help: Free Webinar with Meals on Wheels Senior Services of Rockwall County

ROCKWALL COUNTY, TX (October 5, 2026) — Meals on Wheels Senior Services of Rockwall County invites family caregivers, healthcare professionals, and community members to attend a free online educational program, “What to Do When an Aging Parent Refuses Help,” on Tuesday, October 20, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. CDT.

For many older adults who have spent much of their lives helping and caring for others, accepting help themselves can be difficult. Adult children and family caregivers may struggle with how to offer needed support while respecting an aging parent’s independence, wishes, and sense of dignity.

Hosted by the WellMed Charitable Foundation, this highly interactive workshop will explore ways caregivers can use empathy and curiosity to better understand an older adult’s resistance to receiving help and encourage them to accept assistance more graciously. Real-life case illustrations will be used throughout the presentation to demonstrate practical approaches caregivers can apply in their own families.

The presentation will be led by Barry J. Jacobs, PsyD, a clinical psychologist, family therapist, healthcare consultant, author, and nationally recognized caregiver advocate. Dr. Jacobs is coauthor of The AARP Caregiver Answer Book and serves on the board of the Caregiver Action Network. His professional work focuses extensively on supporting individuals living with chronic and serious illnesses and their family caregivers. He also brings personal caregiving experience, having served as the primary caregiver for his stepfather with Alzheimer’s disease and his mother with vascular dementia.

The event is free and open to family caregivers, healthcare professionals, and anyone interested in learning effective and compassionate approaches to supporting aging loved ones.
