ROYSE CITY, TX – October 4, 2021 — Royse City ISD invites the community to a special groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the new Ruth Cherry Elementary School in the Verandah Estates Community. The event takes place on Friday, October 29 at 10:30 a.m. at 1450 Verandah Blvd in Royse City, Texas. The construction of the new school was approved by voters in a May 2021 Bond Election. Currently Ruth Cherry Elementary is located on Hwy 1777. The existing facility will transform into an early childhood center when new Ruth Cherry Elementary opens in the Fall of 2022.
Royse City ISD administrators and Ruth Cherry Elementary Staff are pleased to celebrate this wonderful new construction project with Mrs. Cherry and her husband Ben.
“Mrs. Cherry is one of the most beloved educators in our community. The students at her school love her visits. We are grateful to the voters for approving the construction of a beautiful new campus to serve our growing student body and look forward to a wonderful celebration,” said Superintendent Kevin Worthy.
Mrs. Cherry comes from a long line of educators and first came to Royse City ISD in 1965 teaching secondary business, English and elementary classes. She later became the principal at Browning Primary before ending her career as Royse City High School Principal. After a total of 28 years in education, she retired in 1998. In 2009, the district dedicated the intermediate campus to Ruth Cherry. The school was transitioned into an elementary in 2020.
