ROWLETT, TX (Aug. 6, 2022) Last night at approximately 7 p.m., Rowlett Police Department was dispatched to the 3000 block of Silver Springs Way on a welfare concern call. The caller reported concerns relating to her husband (suspect) who was exhibiting strange behavior and for their infant child that was in his care at the location.
Officers arrived on scene at the location and were able to make brief contact with the suspect; however, the suspect quickly ceased communication and further attempts at contact were unsuccessful. Officer were eventually able to open the garage where an unresponsive child was located inside a vehicle that was parked in the garage. Officers administered CPR and the child was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Following information obtained by the suspect’s wife indicating that the suspect was armed with a handgun, a perimeter was established and surrounding houses were evacuated.
Officers made additional attempts to contact the suspect via multiple modes of communication over the course of several hours; however, the suspect refused all modes of contact. For over an hour officers deployed the use of multiple types of gas irritants into the residence in an attempt to prompt the suspect to exit and resolve the matter peacefully. The RPD Special Weapons Unit and Tactics (SWAT) unit utilized the team’s drone and robot, which each contain camera system capabilities, to enter the house and determine the status of the suspect. Neither methods were successful. At approximately 2AM Rowlett SWAT made entry into the residence. The team was able to locate the suspect and take him into protective custody. Three members of the SWAT team were treated at a local hospital for injuries sustained during the operation and were later released. The suspect was also hospitalized for injuries he incurred during the incident and is currently detained facing multiple felony charges, pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation by RPD’s Criminal Investigations Division.
