ROCKWALL/HEATH, TX (Jan. 15, 2023) The Rockwall High School Interact Club recently hosted their second annual Labyrinth Walk to raise funds for a Malawian girl’s education. The event, which was open to the public, took place on Jan. 7 at Holy Trinity by The Lake Episcopal Church in Heath.
The Interact club partnered with Orant Charities, a Fort Worth-based foundation striving to support women in Africa. All monetary donations from the Labyrinth Walk will go toward funding one year of schooling for a Malawian girl.
“High school there is not free for them,” said Carly Braaten, Interact Vice President, “usually it’s the men who get the education.”
Due to the poor conditions in Malawi, most parents are forced to choose which of their children will attend school. The Interact club chose to support the women since most families will only send their sons.
“A lot of the girls have huge dreams, so we’re hoping to help them accomplish those,” said Braaten.
The Labyrinth walk is a permanent installation at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and remains open to the public 24/7. It can be found painted on the ground of the back parking lot behind the church. For those who are interested in coming to pray, meditate, and relieve stress, the Labyrinth Walk can be a helpful tool.
“There’s a mindfulness to it,” said attendee Craig Zurek of Heath, “There is one path in and one path out. In the middle, it’s a time of reflection, so you can use it to meditate, brainstorm ideas, or express thankfulness.”
The Labyrinth Walk at Holy Trinity was founded in part by congregation members Jan and Herb Moltzen, who were asked by the church to carry out its original painting and design. The couple had previously lived in North Dallas, where Jan was deeply inspired by the Labyrinth Ministry of the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration. She and her husband sought to bring a similar Labyrinth design and ministry to Holy Trinity, where it continues to thrive today.
“There’s no right or wrong way to do it,” said Jan, who also attended the event, “There is just a general graciousness. It’s a very calming aspect.”
Interact is a student club that focuses on community service and volunteerism. Each year, student members participate in planning one national project, one international project, and one community service project, among other service-driven events and activities.
